The de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver first flew in 1947. More than 1,600 were built, hundreds are still in commercial service, and it has been called one of the greatest Canadian engineering achievements of the twentieth century. The reason is not aerodynamic brilliance. It is that the company asked the right people what to build.
The design process
De Havilland Canada sent questionnaires to bush pilots and operators across the country and, crucially, listened to the answers. What came back was not a specification for performance. It was a list of practical requirements from people who flew into lakes for a living.
- Doors big enough for a 45-gallon oil drum. This is the most quoted requirement and it is real — the drum is the standard unit of freight in the North, and an aircraft that cannot load one is not useful.
- Get off a short lake fully loaded. Not cruise fast. Take off short, with weight, in still air on a hot day.
- Run on whatever fuel is available. The Beaver's Pratt & Whitney R-985 radial would tolerate poor fuel.
- Be repairable in the field. By a pilot with hand tools, hundreds of kilometres from anything.
- Take floats, skis or wheels with a straightforward changeover, because the season dictates which.
What it became
The Beaver opened the Canadian North to reliable commercial access. Mineral exploration, forestry, survey work, government services, and access to communities without roads all depended on it.
The US military bought them in quantity — designated the L-20 and later U-6 — and used them in Korea and Vietnam, which is how the type spread internationally.
Today Beavers fly commercially in Canada, Alaska, the Maldives, the Pacific islands and anywhere else with more water than runway. Harbour Air in Vancouver operates one of the largest fleets, running scheduled seaplane services between Vancouver and Victoria.
Why it never got replaced
Aircraft designs are normally superseded. The Beaver largely has not been, for an economic reason: the market for a piston-engine STOL utility aircraft is not large enough to justify the certification cost of a clean-sheet replacement, and the existing airframes are simple enough to keep rebuilding.
A substantial industry exists around rebuilding and re-engining Beavers, most commonly converting them to turbine power with a Pratt & Whitney PT6. A turbine Beaver is effectively a new aircraft on an old certificate.
The electric one
In 2019 Harbour Air flew a Beaver converted to electric propulsion — the first flight of a commercial electric aircraft. The choice of airframe was deliberate: short routes, low altitude, fixed schedules and an airframe that is fully understood.
A design from 1947 became the testbed for what may come next, which is a reasonable summary of the Beaver's whole career.
