On 2 June 1983, Air Canada flight 797 was cruising from Dallas to Montreal via Toronto when a fire began in the rear lavatory of the DC-9. The crew diverted to Cincinnati and landed. Within ninety seconds of the doors opening, the cabin flashed over. Of the 46 people aboard, 23 died. This accident is the reason modern cabins look the way they do.
The fire
Circuit breakers for the rear lavatory flush motor tripped repeatedly. The flight attendant later reported smoke from the lavatory. The crew initially treated it as an electrical fault of the kind that resolves itself.
By the time the severity was clear, the fire was inside the cabin lining where it could not be reached, burning material that produced dense, toxic smoke. The cabin filled. Passengers moved forward and lay on the floor to breathe.
Captain Donald Cameron and First Officer Claude Ouimet flew a rapid descent with instruments becoming unreadable through smoke, and landed at Cincinnati about seventeen minutes after the first indication.
The flashover
The aircraft stopped and the doors and exits were opened. This introduced oxygen into a superheated cabin full of unburned combustion products.
The result was a flashover — the entire cabin igniting almost at once. It happened in seconds. Those who reached exits immediately survived; those still moving down the aisle did not. Both pilots got out. Twenty-three passengers did not.
What changed, and it is a long list
The NTSB investigation produced one of the most far-reaching sets of cabin safety changes in aviation history. Almost all of it is visible on your next flight.
- Floor proximity lighting. The illuminated strip along the aisle floor exists because passengers in AC797 could not see the exits through smoke at head height.
- Smoke detectors in lavatories. Mandatory, and the reason the lavatory has a detector and a placard about tampering with it.
- Automatic fire extinguishers in lavatory waste bins. Fitted so a bin fire is suppressed without anyone needing to notice it.
- Fire-blocking seat cushions. Cabin materials were required to resist ignition and to slow flame spread, directly targeting the flashover mechanism.
- Emergency evacuation procedures and training were revised, with far more emphasis on getting people out immediately rather than in an orderly fashion.
- Firefighting equipment and crew training in the cabin were strengthened.
The doctrine it established
The deeper change was in how an in-flight fire is treated. Before AC797, a smoke indication was something to diagnose. After it, the doctrine became: an uncontrolled fire you cannot see and cannot reach gives you minutes, and you land immediately.
That principle was reinforced fifteen years later by Swissair 111 off Nova Scotia, where the same category of hidden fire progressed faster than a crew could assess it. The two Canadian-connected accidents together define how the industry now treats smoke of unknown origin.
It is worth stating plainly: if you have ever noticed the little lights along the floor of an aircraft aisle, you are looking at a memorial to twenty-three people who died in Cincinnati in 1983.
