Tools and sharps

Can I bring tools on a plane?

The short answer

Tools under 6 cm may pass in carry-on; anything longer, and anything with a blade, goes in checked baggage. Multi-tools with a knife are always refused in the cabin.

Carry-on: Restricted
Checked: Yes

Screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers under 6 cm are generally accepted in Canada. Drills, saws, crowbars and hammers are checked-baggage items regardless of size.

A multi-tool with any blade is refused in the cabin even if every other function would be allowed. This is the single most commonly confiscated item.
