Can I bring a lighter on a plane?

The short answer

One ordinary lighter on your person or in carry-on. Lighters are forbidden in checked baggage, and torch lighters are forbidden entirely.

Carry-on: Restricted
Checked: No

A standard disposable or Zippo-style lighter is permitted, limited to one per passenger. Torch and jet lighters, which produce a blue windproof flame, are prohibited in both bags.

Safety matches follow the same rule: one book on your person, none in checked baggage. Strike-anywhere matches are banned outright.
