The Observation at Exeter: When a Whole Town Saw UFOs

January 25, 2026485 views5 min read

In September 1965, the small town of Exeter, New Hampshire became the epicenter of a UFO sighting that captivated the nation. Dozens of witnesses, including police officers, reported seeing strange lights and craft in the sky, sparking extensive media coverage and an official U.S. Air Force investigation.

The Beginnings of Unexplained Phenomena

In the early morning hours of September 3, 1965, the serene New England town of Exeter, New Hampshire became the stage for one of the most memorable UFO sightings in American history. The event began just after midnight when police officer Eugene Bertrand encountered a distressed motorist on Route 101. The young woman, Beverley Ann Rack, described being followed by a glowing red object in the sky.

Officer Bertrand took note of the incident but initially considered the experience to be a fluke. However, moments later, Bertrand received a radio call to return to the station where he met 18-year-old Norman Muscarello, who was visibly shaken. Muscarello described witnessing a massive, silent, hovering object flashing with bright red lights while he was hitchhiking.

A Night of Unusual Encounters

Together with Officer David Hunt, Officer Bertrand drove Muscarello back to the location of the sighting. Upon arrival, the officers were astonished to witness the same UFO that Muscarello had described. The silent object hovered and maneuvered with smooth precision, emitting a series of brilliant, pulsating lights. Bertrand later recounted, "I've never seen anything like it before. It was a flying object that had no defined form aside from the lights."

Following these experiences, additional reports of unexplained lights came pouring into the Exeter police station. Reports came from both civilians and other police officers, including Patrolman Reginald “Scratch” Toland, who also witnessed similar phenomena later that night.

National Attention and Investigation

The incident at Exeter gained national attention, being reported in publications such as The Boston Globe and The New York Times. The public's interest was piqued by the reputability of the witnesses and the level of detail in their accounts. A notable point in the media coverage was the uniformity of the sightings from multiple locations by different individuals who were unknown to each other.

In response to growing concerns, the U.S. Air Force initiated an investigation under the banner of Project Blue Book, a program aimed at understanding and documenting UFO reports. A senior official from the Air Force visited Exeter and interviewed several witnesses, including the police officers involved.

Confronting the Skeptics

While believers were convinced by the compelling eyewitness accounts, skeptics argued the sightings could be attributed to known aerospace activities. Some suggested that the bright lights might have stemmed from military exercises at nearby Pease Air Force Base, while others posited atmospheric phenomena or celestial bodies as possible explanations.

Despite the skeptics' claims, the Air Force’s final report on the Exeter sighting, published months later, labeled the incident as "unsolved," suggesting that there was insufficient evidence to definitively explain the sightings.

Legacy of the Exeter Incident

The "Incident at Exeter" remains one of the most well-documented UFO sightings in history, having inspired books, television specials, and even a yearly festival in Exeter, celebrating the event and its role in UFO lore. The credibility of the witnesses and the thorough investigation make it a focal point for discussions about extraterrestrial life and unexplained aerial phenomena.

In the decades since, the Exeter event has continued to captivate both UFO enthusiasts and skeptics alike. It serves as a reminder of the mysteries that still exist in our skies and the enduring human fascination with the unknown.
