In September 1965, the skies over Exeter, New Hampshire, became the stage for one of America's most compelling UFO events. The Exeter Incident brought widespread media attention and numerous investigations, with multiple eyewitnesses reporting the sighting of bizarre, glowing objects.

The Exeter Incident: Examining the 1965 UFO Encounter

On a clear night in September 1965, the peaceful town of Exeter, New Hampshire, which boasted a population of approximately 5,000, found itself at the heart of one of the most intriguing UFO sightings of the 20th century. The events that unfolded over a few hours in the early morning of September 3rd captured the attention of the nation and fueled a slew of investigations, both private and governmental.

The Eyewitness Reports

It all began with 18-year-old Norman Muscarello, a recent high school graduate, who, while hitchhiking from Amesbury, Massachusetts, to his home in Exeter around 2:00 AM, noticed an unusual sight. Near the Exeter Airport, he saw a large, silent object with blinking red lights moving towards him. Frightened, Muscarello sprinted to a nearby house and, finding no help, eventually flagged down a passing car which took him to the Exeter police station.

At the station, Officer Eugene Bertrand listened to Muscarello's frantic account. Just an hour earlier, Officer Bertrand himself had encountered a similar occurrence. While responding to a call about unidentified lights, he observed a strange, bright object illuminating the night sky but dismissed it as an aircraft at the time.

Officer Bertrand, accompanied by Muscarello, returned to the location of the sighting. They were soon joined by Officer David Hunt. Together, they witnessed the craft as it reappeared, maintaining its silent glide over the fields. According to reports, the object made no sound except for a pulsating hum and displayed brilliant red, green, and white lights that seemed to be in a rotating pattern.

Media Attention and Investigations

As dawn broke, so did the news of the sighting. The story rapidly spread across national newspapers, making the front pages of many, and inviting a spotlight to this quaint New England town. Subsequent investigations were launched by various groups, most notably by the United States Air Force as part of its Project Blue Book, a systematic study intended to scientifically analyze UFO data.

Project Blue Book investigators arrived with the objective of discrediting or explaining the sightings as natural or man-made phenomena. Despite their efforts, no satisfactory explanation emerged to explain the vivid details recounted by witnesses, and the case was left unresolved, categorized as an “unidentified” aerial phenomenon.

Theories and Skepticism

Over the years, the Exeter Incident has sparked numerous theories and interpretations. While some skeptics suggest the sighting was misidentified military aircraft from nearby Pease Air Force Base, others remain convinced of its unexplained, possibly extraterrestrial origin. The combination of credible witnesses, including law enforcement officers and civilians, lends enduring intrigue to this case.

Interestingly, Harvard astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who served as a consultant on UFO phenomena for the Air Force, visited Exeter. He interviewed witnesses and offered his perspective. Although he acknowledged that the sighting was puzzling, Hynek refrained from conclusive statements, maintaining the importance of scientific inquiry in such cases.
