Malaysia Airlines MH370

8 March 2014 Departed Kuala Lumpur; believed lost in the southern Indian Ocean

The short version

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 stopped communicating less than an hour after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing, turned back across the Malay Peninsula and flew on for roughly seven hours. Debris later washed ashore around the western Indian Ocean, but the main wreckage and flight recorders have never been found, and the official investigation could not determine why it happened.

1What happened

On 8 March 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur shortly after midnight local time, bound for Beijing. The aircraft was a Boeing 777-200ER registered 9M-MRO, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew. Most passengers were Chinese and Malaysian nationals. The flight climbed normally to cruising altitude over the South China Sea, and the crew acknowledged a handover from Malaysian to Vietnamese air traffic control with a routine sign-off. That was the last voice contact. Within minutes the aircraft’s transponder stopped transmitting, and the flight disappeared from civilian radar screens.

Malaysian military primary radar, which does not depend on a transponder, tracked an aircraft believed to be MH370 turning back to the southwest, crossing the Malay Peninsula and heading out over the Strait of Malacca before passing beyond radar range northwest of Sumatra. For several days the initial search concentrated on the South China Sea, where the flight had last been seen by civilian controllers. Only as the military radar data and later the satellite data were analysed did searchers realise the aircraft had flown in a completely different direction.

Analysis of automated satellite communications showed the aircraft remained powered and airborne for about seven more hours, ending somewhere in the remote southern Indian Ocean. An air and surface search, followed by an Australian-led underwater search of roughly 120,000 square kilometres of deep seabed, found nothing and was suspended in January 2017. A private search by Ocean Infinity in 2018 also ended without success. In July 2015 a flaperon washed up on Réunion Island, the first confirmed physical trace of the aircraft.

2The evidence

The most important evidence is the satellite data. After the transponder and the aircraft’s ACARS reporting went silent, the satellite data unit on board continued to answer periodic automated connection checks from an Inmarsat satellite over the Indian Ocean. These handshakes were never designed to report position, but their timing and small frequency shifts allowed analysts to calculate a series of arcs on which the aircraft must have been at each moment. The last complete handshake placed it on what became known as the seventh arc, consistent with fuel exhaustion over the southern Indian Ocean.

The military radar track is the second key strand. It showed the turn back across the peninsula and the course out over the Strait of Malacca. The 2018 Malaysian safety investigation report concluded that the turn back was more likely made under manual control than by the autopilot. Separately, no distress call, emergency message or mayday was ever received from the aircraft, and the transponder and ACARS losses occurred in the short interval between air traffic control sectors.

The third strand is debris. After the Réunion flaperon, which French authorities confirmed came from MH370, dozens of further items were found on shores in Mozambique, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritius and South Africa. Several were confirmed as coming from 9M-MRO and others were judged almost certain or highly likely to. Drift modelling of those finds is broadly consistent with an impact near the seventh arc. Analysis of the flaperon and a flap section led Australian investigators to judge that the flaps were probably not extended, which argues against a controlled ditching, although this is an interpretation rather than a certainty.

3The official explanation

The official investigation was conducted under international rules by the Malaysian ICAO Annex 13 Safety Investigation Team, which published its report in July 2018. The report set out the aircraft’s history, the crew’s backgrounds, the radar and satellite analysis and the debris findings in detail. Its central conclusion was that the team was unable to determine the real cause of the disappearance. It stated that the answer could only be established with certainty if the wreckage and flight recorders were recovered.

The report did not conclude that the crew were responsible, and it did not rule out unlawful interference by a third party. It found nothing in the examined backgrounds, finances or health records of the flight crew that pointed to a motive, while acknowledging the limits of that review. It also found no evidence that the aircraft’s systems had suffered a failure capable of explaining the sequence of events. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which led the underwater search, published its own operational report in 2017 describing the search methods and the reasoning behind the search areas.

4Alternative explanations

The most discussed hypothesis is a deliberate diversion by someone on board. Some former investigators, analysts and authors argue that the switching off of communications at a sector boundary, the turn back and the long flight into empty ocean are best explained by intentional action from the flight deck. This remains a hypothesis. The official report did not reach that conclusion, no one has been found responsible, and no evidence establishing who was at the controls or why has been published. Claims that present a named person’s guilt as established fact go beyond what the record supports.

Mechanical or electrical hypotheses propose a fire, an electrical failure or a sudden decompression that disabled communications and incapacitated those on board, with the aircraft then flying on until its fuel ran out. A hypoxia scenario of this kind resembles other known accidents in which an aircraft continued on autopilot after the occupants lost consciousness. Its weakness is that it struggles to account for the turn back and the later changes of course seen on radar, which appear to require control inputs after the communications went silent.

Many other claims have circulated: that the aircraft landed somewhere, was shot down, or was taken remotely. None has produced supporting evidence, and most are hard to reconcile with the confirmed debris in the western Indian Ocean and the satellite arcs. A useful test for any theory is whether it accounts for all three main strands of evidence at once: the radar track, the full series of satellite handshakes and the drift pattern of the recovered debris.

5What remains unexplained

The cause remains genuinely unknown. The evidence constrains where the aircraft probably ended its flight and shows that it flew for hours after going silent, but it does not show why communications stopped, who or what was controlling the aircraft, or what happened in its final minutes. Even the precise location along the seventh arc depends on assumptions about speed, altitude and the final descent, and that is why successive searches have covered different zones without success.

In 2025 the Malaysian government agreed a new no-find, no-fee arrangement with Ocean Infinity, and reports indicated that seabed search operations resumed that year, with activity limited by the harsh southern Indian Ocean seasons. As of this writing, no confirmed discovery of the main wreckage has been announced. The disappearance also led to new international requirements for more frequent position reporting and autonomous distress tracking on airliners, so that a comparable loss of contact should be far harder to repeat.
